BBC News Article Analysis

Hillsborough Disaster: Families profoundly failed, say police is the title of the BBC article by By Samantha Jagger & Tom Mullen.

The article leads with the fact that police forces are continuing to apologise for the “failings” on and since the Hillsborough disaster of 1989. It features a summary of the incident which the apologies are in relation to, which provides a clearer context for those with a lesser understanding of the situation.

The structure of the article goes from providing context in the form of prior events, such as the incident itself, previous inquests (2012 and 2016). The inverted pyramid is not a noticeable with this piece as the layout in terms of information is not as easy to see.

With quotes from those involved, one being Chief Constable Andy Marsh where he said “For what happened, as a senior policing leader, I profoundly apologise. Policing got it badly wrong.” This provides a direct link to the take of a professional. For a major member of the police force to openly criticise handlings on the police, is important, showing accountability.

The length of the paragraphs used was 3 to 5 lines in length through the article, doing so provides each piece of information in digestible chunks without repetition, getting the story across effectively.

With such heavy overtones, the story is dealt with in a way where facts, statements and impact are at the forefront. Agenda is not the aim of this story, it is a genuine telling on an event and its wider reaching, long lasting effects.
